How Can A Pilates Ring Help Your Workout?

Pilates RingPilates is becoming more and more popular as a way to keep both the body and the mind healthy.  As with most exercises, Pilates can also be combined with the use of equipment to get a better workout.  Among the more popular tools used by Pilates enthusiasts is the Pilates ring.

What Is A Pilates Ring?

The Pilates ring (also known as the Pilates magic circle or the Windsor ring) is circle-shaped elastic piece of plastic, metal or rubber that is used to create light resistance when carrying out Pilates movements.  The ring is pressed on using the hands, thighs, or other parts of the body to create the resistance.  This light resistance makes holding poses more difficult and therefore tones muscles even more.

What Are The Benefits Of Using One?

There are a number of benefits of using a Pilates ring.  Not only do they provide the resistance that helps tone muscles effectively, they also reduce the risk of injury that comes with using free weights.  Since free weights can be too heavy, cause too much resistance, or be dropped on body parts, they aren’t the best tools to use during a Pilates session.

Not only that, Pilates rings are light, portable, and inexpensive compared to other Pilates equipment such as reformers.  Nevertheless, they still give a killer workout.  Pilates rings are suitable for workouts of various difficulty, so they can be used both by beginners or seasoned exercisers.

Choosing The Right Pilates Ring

Convinced that a Pilates ring is good for your workout?   Good!  Here are some tips you can take into consideration before making your purchase:

  • Choose the material of the ring according to the type of workout you engage in.  If you regularly perform more intense moves that require heavy resistance, choose a metal ring.  This is because a rubber or plastic ring won’t be strong enough to withstand heavy pressure.
  • Buy rings with pads both on the inside and outside of the ring for better versatility.
  • If you’re a light to moderate exerciser and portability is more important to you than durability, you may then opt for a rubber or light metal ring.
  • Always read reviews first on any ring you’re considering to buy.  Otherwise, you can also ask your Pilates instructor or a fellow Pilates workout buddy for their recommendation.  After all, you don’t want to end up with a flimsy ring!
