You know you have to lose weight.  Maybe you look in the mirror and you don’t like what you see, or it could be that the number on the scales is just a bit higher than it should be.  But the problem is, you just don’t feel like doing something about your weight.  You’re not motivated enough.

Well, you’re not alone in this situation.  If losing weight was easy, everyone would have done it already!  Thankfully, though, losing weight is worth the effort.  Why? Because once you are at a healthy weight, you will look great (being able to fit into that outfit that you’ve been meaning to wear since forever), feel great (abundant energy to do various activities without feeling fatigued or lethargic) and be great (your health both mental and physical will be in tip-top shape!).

Motivating yourself to lose weight is just a matter of changing your perspective; instead of thinking about how inconvenient and difficult losing weight is, focus on what a healthy weight can do for your life in general.  You can help yourself focus by doing some of the things below:

  • 1) Put a picture of yourself on the fridge and on your bedroom door.  Every time you feel like grabbing a snack you shouldn’t have, or skipping a workout, look at the picture and remind yourself that you want to change that image you see to something more ideal for your self-confidence and health.  For that you will need to lose weight.
  • 2) When you wake up in the morning, get yourself in the “weight loss mood”.  Tell yourself that you are going to keep to your diet and exercise routine today, and remind yourself why you are doing this.  Every time you feel like binging or spending your exercise time watching TV instead, again mentally speak to yourself to be strong and do what you are supposed to do.  Think about how awful you will feel if you don’t keep to your weight loss plans.
  • 3) If trying to motivate yourself doesn’t help, call a supportive friend or family member.  Get them to remind you why you are doing this, and to throw in some words of motivation.  It’s even better if you can find a weight loss partner to check in with, as you can both help each other in that case.

In the end, motivating yourself to lose weight needs to be done in a way that you find suitable for your character.  Everyone’s idea of motivation is different, but the steps above will get you started on the right track.
