You’re ready to add an indoor exercise bike to your home gym.  Congratulations!  Exercise bikes are a fantastic low impact way to get in shape and burn calories.  Yet shopping for an exercise bike can be overwhelming.  There are so many different models and features to compare.  The following tips should make your purchase a bit easier.

#1 Back Trouble? Joint Pain? Consider A Recumbent Exercise Bike.

If you have back trouble, consider focusing your attention on comparing recumbent exercise bicycles.  They have a supportive back and a comfortable seat.  They are also helpful if you have a lot of joint pain.  However, always try before you buy.  Head to your local recreation or community center or sit down and try one at the fitness equipment store.  Make sure it’s a comfortable choice.

#2 Wind Resistance or Resistance Band?

There are two basic types of resistance with indoor exercise bikes.  You can either choose wind resistance or a tension band.  With wind resistance the harder you pedal the more resistance there is.  With a tension band you can pedal hard at a low resistance – you have a few more resistance and intensity options with a resistance band.

#3 Main Features

Many bikes offer a menu of additional features.  The main features to compare include bike seat and computer display.  You want your seat to be comfortable – if it hurts to sit on it, you’re not going to use it.  And make sure the computer display is easy to use and displays the information you need it to display.  This information might include workout duration, calories burned, distance traveled, and speed.

#4 Adjustability

Any indoor exercise bike you choose needs to be adjustable to fit your particular cycling style and body.  For example, if the bike seat is too low you can experience hip and knee pain.  If the bike seat is too far back from the handlebars you can experience back pain.  You want to be able to adjust the seat and handlebars to fit your body.

#5 Intensity Controls

Assuming you’re looking at a bicycle with resistance band technology, you want to be able to adjust the resistance quickly and easily.  Many basic stationary bicycles have manual tension controls.  You turn a dial and the resistance increases or decreases.  Some of the more advanced indoor exercise bicycles have electronic controls.

Finally, take a look at the maintenance requirements, warranty, and price.  Ideally, your bike won’t require too much maintenance.  The simpler the mechanics, the less likely they are to break, however a nice warranty adds some security to your purchase.  Finally, compare price.  Indoor bikes range in price from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.  Depending on your needs, and if you are willing to shop around, you really can get a good quality indoor exercise bike for a few hundred dollars.
