Being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean you can no longer lead a normal life.  While lifestyle changes are inevitable, you can still enjoy most of your favorite foods and activities.  Eating right is always important; more so when you suffer from diabetes.  Below are a few tips that will show you how to control diabetes with diet so you can continue to enjoy your meals without feeling deprived.

Diabetes and Diet

Eating right is probably the most important thing you can do to control diabetes.  The foods you eat have a huge impact on your blood sugar level as well as weight loss.  Diabetic patients have the same nutritional needs as non-diabetics and they do not need anything fancy or complicated.  If you suffer from diabetes you just have to pay more attention to what you eat, particularly when it comes to carbohydrates.

1. Choose high-fiber, complex carbohydrates

Carbohydrates, especially refined carbs like sugar and white flour, can cause your blood glucose level to spike.  By making smart choices, you can control diabetes without totally eliminating carbs from your diet.

Limit your consumption of candy, white bread and pasta, rice and sweet snacks.  Instead, focus on high-fiber complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes and whole grains.  Complex carbohydrates have a low glycemic index; that is, they release carbs more slowly and help keep blood sugar levels more balanced, thus preventing the overproduction of insulin.

2. Consume sweets in moderation.

Just because you have diabetes does not mean you must eliminate sweets completely.  You can still enjoy your favorite dessert, but in moderation.  One of the best ways to control diabetes is to reduce the sugar in your diet.

Cut back on the amount of sweets you consume.  It may be tough at first, but your sugar cravings will go away as preferences and eating habits change.  Avoid sodas and sweetened fruit juices – they’re high in sugar.  Add healthy fats to your dessert.  Fat slows down the digestive process and prevents blood sugar levels from spiking.  Peanut butter, yogurt and some nuts are good choices.

3. Eat regularly.

If you’re a diabetic, it’s important to regulate your blood sugar level and prevent it from spiking or crashing.  A healthy diet is only one part in controlling diabetes.  You must also follow a regular eating schedule.  This means you should never skip a meal.  A light, nutritious snack between meals keeps hunger pangs at bay.  This helps ensure that your blood glucose level stays balanced.
